Submersible Accidents and Incidents
When this article was started, seven Russians were trapped 625 feet below the surface of the in a minisub. The propellor of the 44 ft long AS-28 Prize submarine became entangled in an undersea cable on Thursday August 4th, 2005. A British rescue ROV cut the cable free on Saturday and the submarine surfaced with all crew in reasonable condition.
Submarines of any size are exposed to dangers unique to undersea travel but a number of factors seem to work against the safety of small submarines. This article will focus on small modern submersibles, both commercial and homebuilt. It attempts to categorize accident information with the goal of identifying key threats. Some suggestions are made as to avoiding or reducing the exposure to these threats.
