I just received a note and photos from Mark Smith of Hamilton, Alabama about his wet sub project. Mark is an experienced diver and long time undersea enthusiast, and he's tackled an ambitious wet sub project.
Here's his note:
Mark leaves an email (drjeckel_2002 at yahoo.com) where he can be reached for questions. Drop him a note and give him some encouragement!I started this project around August of 2006 and
although it has been slow going, all that I have left
if the canopy, batteries, motors, weights and ballast
tanks. Many of the part I have just not the time to
put it all together. This sub is based on Kent
Markham's "Silent Runner" only in a bigger scale and
with many modifications that I have designed.
I got interested in subs when I was a diver in the
Navy. I always thought that it would be nice to have a
way to get around underwater and feel somewhat
protected at the same time. I searched the net over
and found the plans and got started. I have a friend
that I got the tank from, which is a fuel tank(drop
tank)from what I think was a C1-30. It is made of
fiberglass and aluminum, while the rest so far has
been made of mild steel.
I have been a certified scuba diver for 27 years so I
have a lot of experience in the underwater world. I
plan on using the sub for search, recovery, salvage,
and of course pleasure. Although I live in west
central Alabama, I do like to travel so I plan on
taking it to the coast and doing a little diving there
as well. I will be powered by 2 80lb thrust motors. I
plan on having lights and sonar as well in the future
but I just haven't gotten that far yet. The trailer in
made myself and I still have a few modifications to do
on it to make launching and recover a little easier...
