How do Submarines Work
How Submarines WorkThis mini simulator shows the basics of how submarine ballast tanks work. Control the buoyancy of the submarine by allowing water in to the tanks and see how the submarine responds.
Dive Instructions
Surfacing Instructions
Is this really how submarines dive? Well, it's only part of how it's done. They do use ballast tanks but when they're diving they are also moving through the water. Like an airplane, submarines 'fly' up and down through the water using dive planes and their horizontal tail surfaces.
This animation explains just a few details of ballast tanks. These systems and procedures are in reality very complex. For example, here's a ballast piping diagram from a WWII-era US submarine, the design of which is over sixty years old!
For more information, read Johan Heiswolf's description of submarine ballasting. He covers the subject in more detail and describes some of the variations in design. Also has some material on model submarines.
Dive Instructions
- Open the vents
- But first close the hatch!
Surfacing Instructions
- Close the vents
- Empty the ballast tanks
- Open the hatch once you're back on the surface

Submarine game Buoyancy - a free online submarine simulator
Tiny Sub SimTry to control the submarine by filling and blowing her ballast tanks. The boat in this game is based on the USS Holland from the early 1900's and was the US Navy's first submarine*. You can control the fore and aft trim tanks and the main ballast tank. Score more points with good depth control and watch out for mud and debris on the bottom.
The actual Holland was trimmed to be about 100lbs positively buoyant when fully ballasted. In this game she's fairly negative so you can submerge more quickly and without any forward way.
In mid-water, heading for the bottom
* How about the USS Alligator?
