Sub-Log Wreck Maps
Technical notes
Sub-Log Wreck MapsThis system was started with data from the NOAA Automated Wreck and Obstruction Information System database which has about 12,000 entries in US coastal waters. I've purchased data on another 1200 submarine wrecks and am also adding a few more historic, significant wrecks. I welcome coordinates of wrecks that you think should be listed and may add a system for easy entry of wreck information but for now if you wish you can email them.
Technical Notes:
This application uses the Google Maps API which provides a great amount of map data and a good programming API.
The Sub-Log Shipwreck Map stores all wreck positions and information in a mySql database and serves this information out as XML through a PHP script. The Google Map API uses AJAX technology which is an acronym for Asychronous Javascript and XML. What this basically means is that the map page never refreshes when you do a search or zoom or pan the map. Data and map images are sent in the background to the page and updated without the usual "refresh".
Submarine wreck map
Sub-Log Wreck MapsSome updates added 11-3-2005:
Here's a submarine wreck map that's in development - mostly working now except with Internet Explorer. It uses the same database as the Shipwreck Map that you can find listed in the menu but it focuses on just submarine wrecks and adds some search improvements that should probably be in the standard wreck map.
Most of it IS working now and new features include:
* search by a circular area (click to move the search area center, adjust the Radius to see the search area change size)
* search by nationality of vessel, and
* search by year of loss or incident. I'm not sure how to present this, but some kind of timeline seems useful for looking at WWI and WWII sinkings. This search feature is still disabled - I have to just decide how to do it but probably will just list by year for now.
Wreck maps overview
Sub-Log Wreck MapsHi, just a quick note to kick off the forum. The Sub-Log Shipwreck Map has been up and running for a couple of weeks now. It originally contained around 12,000 wrecks and obstructions in US coastal waters that I loaded from the NOAA wreck database. I think bought some submarine shipwreck data and after getting that loaded had over 1200 submarine wrecks and incidents in the system.
Everything is available by searching on the map page and the results come up in a list and also as markers on a world map. Maps are supplied by Google and can be easily panned and zoomed.
Please post any ideas or comments!
