Loss of a Yankee SSBN, the K-219 accident

Submarine | Article - Posting | Cold War | Nuclear | Russia/Soviet | Submarine and Undersea Postings

Although the book Hostile Waters, published in 1997, is based on the true story of K-219, this article is a more accurate technical representation of what took place – it leaves out the “Hollywood” aspects and describes the heroic efforts of a crew attempting to save a submarine....

Captain Britanov states that in the eyes of his government, there were no heroes on K-219. When asked the number of times he is called to be a guest lecturer at Russian functions, he simply states, “None – I do not tell the story the way my government wants me to tell it. I did not collide with an American sub.”

Russian Submarine K-129 and the CIA Project Jennifer

Submarine | Cold War | Russia/Soviet | Salvage | Submarine and Undersea Postings | USA
This is probably one of the best stories of the Cold War. A sunken Soviet missile sub that may have been hijacked, a possible rogue missile launch against Pearl Harbor, and the Navy and CIA scrambling to find and recover the sub. Oh and there's an eccentric billionaire. I don't know if it gets any better especially since it seems to be mostly true. :-) Here are some links with a fair amount of reading and some good illustrations of the unusual and classified hardware involved in this story.

Russian submarine escape suit

Submarine | Article - Posting | Cold War | Nuclear | Russia/Soviet | Submarine and Undersea Postings

Here's a fun article by a British author describing his recently purchased Russian submarine escape suit.  The suit, model IDA59, is a 1960's vintage bit of equipment which is free of electronics and has a depth limitation of 300meters.  Interestingly, it uses a highly reactive scrubber compound known as '03' which when combined with water it will dissolve glass!

This suit was worn by officers escaping from the Soviet submarine Komsomolets after the boat caught fire and sank.  One note is that the author describes this suit as used in the deepest ever ascent from a submarine.  I'd add that the sailors were in an escape pod and I believe were not at ambient pressure during the ascent to the surface.

The author describes the suit and rebreather and does a couple of test dives but doesn't give much detail on how it went.

I wish I could post a photo of this suit, but just go to the first link here to read the whole review and see some photos of the author testing it.

USS Dolphin (AGSS-555)

Submarine | Article - Posting | Cold War | Electric | Internal Combustion | Modern | USA

USS Dolphin (AGSS-555) is the United States Navy's only operational diesel-electric, deep-diving, research and development submarine...
The single most significant technical achievement in the development of Dolphin is the pressure hull itself. It is a constant diameter cylinder, closed at its ends with hemispherical heads, and utilizes deep frames instead of bulkheads...

SOSUS: The "Secret Weapon" of Undersea Surveillance

Cold War | Submarine and Undersea Postings | USA

by Edward C. Whitman

Born of a three-way marriage of early Cold War strategic necessity, World War II progress in underwater acoustics, and an extraordinary engineering effort, the Navy’s pioneering Sound Surveillance System – SOSUS – became a key, long-range early-warning asset for protecting the United States against the threat of Soviet ballistic missile submarines and in providing vital cueing information for tactical, deep-ocean, anti-submarine warfare. And although subsequent events – most notably the end of the Cold War – robbed SOSUS of much of its mission, its history remains an object lesson in how inspired, science-based engineering development can lead to extraordinary operational effectiveness...
